02 - The Connection Between Human Values and Security
Human values, as defined by American thinkers like Abraham Maslow and John Dewey, are deeply intertwined with the concept of security. For instance, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs clearly demonstrates that security plays a crucial role in human development. His model emphasizes that higher needs—such as love, esteem, and self-actualization—can only be pursued once basic physiological needs and the need for safety are fulfilled.
The need for safety includes not only physical protection from violence and threats but also stability in social, economic, and emotional dimensions. Without these foundational conditions, individuals cannot focus their energy on achieving higher values like self-esteem or self-actualization. For example, a person living in a conflict zone or facing economic insecurity will lack the capacity to engage in personal growth or contribute to their community.
Similarly, Dewey’s emphasis on the social context of values shows that a democratic society—one that fosters freedom, justice, and education—cannot exist without a basic framework of security. Security is not merely the physical absence of threats but also a stable environment where individuals can freely develop relationships, learn, and contribute to society.
Thus, security is not only a fundamental prerequisite for preserving human values but also the foundation for their development and implementation. Without it, individuals and societies cannot aspire to higher goals and values, as they are forced to focus on survival and basic protection.
Therefore, effective security management is essential for creating conditions in which human values can thrive.
